Shopify Subscriptions in India: What Actually Works
Selling subscriptions on Shopify from an Indian store — payment rails, GST on renewals, pricing around the mandate limit, and the app choices that matter.
Shopify works perfectly well for Indian stores. Shopify subscriptions, as most apps implement them, quietly assume a payment environment India does not have.
Here is what actually works.
The payment rail question
Shopify Payments — the gateway Shopify’s own subscription tooling is built around — is not available in India. Indian merchants use a local gateway, most commonly Razorpay.
That matters more than it sounds. Many subscription apps implement recurring billing by calling Shopify’s subscription billing APIs, which route through Shopify Payments. On an Indian store that path does not exist, so the app either does not support you or falls back to something weaker.
The practical consequence: ask specifically whether an app supports recurring billing on an Indian store with an Indian gateway, and whether it registers e-mandates. “Works with Shopify” and “works for an Indian Shopify store” are different claims.
Price around the mandate limit
Recurring debits in India clear silently below a per-transaction limit — ₹15,000 for most categories — and require the customer to authenticate each charge above it.
This should be a pricing input, not a discovery you make in month two. A ₹1,499/month plan is frictionless. A ₹19,999/year plan asks the customer to approve every renewal.
For large annual commitments, prepaid is the better structure: one authenticated payment at checkout, deliveries scheduled against it, no recurring debit to keep alive. Full detail in the e-mandate limit and your pricing.
Lead with UPI Autopay
A large proportion of Indian consumer payments run on UPI, and a meaningful share of shoppers will not enter card details on a phone at all.
UPI Autopay lets them approve a recurring mandate from their UPI app with a tap. It also removes card expiry as a churn cause entirely, because the mandate is tied to a bank account rather than a card with a printed expiry.
If your subscription funnel is card-only, you are losing signups you will never see in your analytics — they bounce before they reach your payment step. How UPI Autopay works.
GST on every renewal
Each renewal is a supply and needs a proper tax invoice with the GST breakdown — HSN, rate, taxable value, tax amount, and your GSTIN.
International subscription apps typically do not produce this. They produce a receipt. Your accountant needs an invoice, and so does your B2B customer who wants to claim input credit.
If the app does not generate GST invoices on renewals, that work lands on you manually, every cycle, forever. More on GST and subscriptions.
Shipping and serviceability
Subscriptions make delivery problems recur. A pincode that is hard to service is a one-time annoyance for a single order and a monthly one for a subscription.
Two habits help:
- Check serviceability at signup, not at fulfilment. It is much better to decline a subscription than to cancel four deliveries.
- Let the customer change the address from the renewal notification. People move, and they move between deliveries. See handling address changes.
What to look for in an app
For an Indian Shopify store specifically:
| Requirement | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| e-mandate registration at checkout | Without it, renewals fail from month two |
| Pre-debit notification, automated | Legal requirement, 24 hours before every debit |
| UPI Autopay support | Often the highest-converting rail |
| GST invoices on renewals | Your accountant and your B2B customers need them |
| Prepaid plan type | The way to sell above the mandate limit without friction |
| Mandate-aware retries | A mandate failure needs re-registration, not a retry |

Frequently asked questions
Can Shopify Payments handle subscriptions in India?
Shopify Payments is not available in India. Indian stores use a local gateway such as Razorpay, and your subscription app has to work with that gateway's mandate APIs rather than assuming Shopify Payments.
Do I need to charge GST on subscription renewals?
Yes. Each renewal is a supply and needs a tax invoice with the GST breakdown. This is one of the places international subscription apps fall short for Indian merchants.
