Gift Subscriptions: How to Sell Them on Shopify
A gift subscription is a fixed number of deliveries paid for by one person and sent to another. How to structure them, price them, and turn recipients into.
Gift subscriptions are a seasonal spike most subscription businesses under-use. They bring in buyers who would never subscribe for themselves, and recipients who have tried the product for three months with no effort on their part.
What makes a gift subscription different
- The payer and the recipient are different people. Billing goes to one, deliveries to the other.
- It has an end. Nobody wants a gift that keeps charging them indefinitely.
- It’s often bought for a date — a birthday, the holidays — and the first delivery has to land near it.
Structure: fixed length
The cleanest structure is a fixed number of deliveries: three months, six months, twelve. The subscription ends on its own after the last one, with no cancellation needed.
With Super Subscription, a plan can have a maximum number of cycles, after which the subscription finishes — that is the mechanism for a fixed-length gift.
Paid monthly or up front? Gift buyers usually expect to pay once. A plan that takes payment for several deliveries up front fits that best (prepaid plans are coming soon to Super Subscription); paying per delivery also works if the buyer is happy with it and the terms are clear. Prepaid vs pay-as-you-go.
Checkout details that matter
- Recipient’s address as the shipping address
- A gift message — use a note on the order
- No prices on the packing slip
- Start date — make it clear when the first box ships
Pricing
Offer three lengths and make the middle one the obvious choice. A small saving on longer gifts works; most gift buyers are not price-sensitive to the last dollar, but they do like to feel they chose well.
The real opportunity: converting the recipient
A gift ends. What happens next decides whether it was a one-off sale or an acquisition channel.
- Before the last delivery, email the recipient: “Your gift from Sam ends with this box. Want to keep it coming?” — with a link to subscribe, ideally at a welcome price.
- Put the offer in the last box as a printed card.
- Don’t auto-convert. Charging a recipient who never signed up for anything is a dispute waiting to happen.
Timing the season
Gift subscriptions sell in the weeks before the holidays and other gifting dates. Set up the page and product in advance, and plan stock for a batch of first deliveries landing in the same week.
