Pet Food Subscriptions

The one thing nobody can afford to run out of — which makes it one of the stickiest subscriptions there is.

Why subscriptions work here

  • Consumption is predictable to the week, and set by the animal rather than the owner's mood.
  • Running out is a real problem, not an inconvenience — a subscription removes an anxiety, which is a stronger reason to stay than a discount.
  • Owners rarely switch food once a pet is settled on it, so retention after the first few cycles is unusually strong.

How to set it up

Cadence
Set it from bag size and animal: a large bag for a large dog might last four weeks, a small one far less. Offer a wide range — 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks — because the right answer varies more than in most categories.
Discount
Modest. The motivation is not running out; 5–10% is usually enough, and the margin matters because bags are heavy.
Treats and extras
Let subscribers add treats or a toy to the next delivery from the portal — it raises order value without another shipment.
Order early
Keep 'order the next one early' easy to find. A subscriber who ran short and can't get food fast will buy elsewhere and cancel.

What to watch

Shipping weight

Pet food is heavy, and shipping is priced in weight bands. A bag that sits just over a band costs you on every delivery, for every subscriber, forever. Price the subscription with real shipping costs, and check whether a slightly smaller bag falls into a cheaper band.
